Goat Mugging

So someone got her birthday present early. We are excited too as ‘Beauty’ has become a close friend with Daisy. And the big little farmer is embracing the animal husbandry, and is super excited to be planning on showing her this fall at the fair. Beauty, for what its worth is a nigerian dwarf.
For now, they are happy to tussle in the yet to be mowed orchard. Look at all that hay.

(Sorry about the butt shot of the goat, the cell phone is not a DSLR).

Still buzzing!

We actually saw some sun yesterday and the bees loved it. Its a lot of fun to watch them come in with dandy lion pollen during the spring. Like little bits of sunshine.

We are still keeping our fingers crossed for honey this year! I am managing a hive for a friend a few miles away (they want to have bees, and support the beleaguered little pollinators, but don’t want to actually ‘work the bees’) and the package went in on the 21st. They are doing well too.

Yellow. 12#
Fingerling. 8#

Herloom red. 7# (I will find out what they were)

Sheetmulch!

We are trying something new on the farm this year. Sheet mulch. I saved a bunch of boxes from work, and although we don’t read the paper, a co-worker saved some for us. The area by the hoop house will be for squash, gourds and such. What you don’t see is the deep pile of half rotten hay from a wet round bale we had. Once the weather is better the zucchini, acorn squash, pumpkin, hubbard and other winter squash will go in.

The beans and potatoes (coming in another post) went in today as well. Summer is coming!!!

Baby chicks went into the deck brooder today as well. Ah peace and quiet in the house again.

Babies!

Here is a quick look at our chickens for this year. Just some green egg layers at this point, no massive ‘Chickpocolops’, that will come later. Meat birds are in the plans. Once the weather reduces our brooding costs.

Labor Day

Labor day. A day to play. I was able to slip away from the farm for a few hours this morning and brought home ‘almost a limit’ of sea bright Pinks. I’ll be back at them for the next few weeks. Hopefully with enough to have some stockpiled for the winter.

Posted via mobile phone, please excuse any rough edges..
